House Ethics Committee Launches George Santos Probe
BAYSIDE, QUEENS — The House Ethics Committee launched an investigation into Rep. George Santos looking into possible illegalities during his congressional campaign last year and other misconduct, according to a statement released Thursday.
The committee unanimously voted on Tuesday to investigate whether the Republican "engaged in unlawful activity with respect to his 2022 congressional campaign; failed to properly disclose required information on statements filed with the House," and other possible illegalities.
The probe will also look into whether the freshman lawmaker violated conflict of interest laws and whether he sexually harassed a former aide at his office, the statement said.
Santos, who represents parts of Queens and Long Island, said in a tweet that he will be "fully cooperating" with the investigation.
The ethics committee, composed of 10 members, said Congressman David Joyce, Congresswoman Susan Wild, and Congressmen John Rutherford and Glenn Ivey will be part of the Investigative Subcommittee.
"The Committee notes that the mere fact of establishing an Investigative Subcommittee does not itself indicate that any violation has occurred," the statement reads.
The investigation comes after a monolith of allegations against Santos have come to light in the last two months, some of which the embattled Republican has admitted to.
Federal prosecutors are already looking into Santos' finances and congressional filings, looking into possible illegal campaign funding.
Santos admitted he lied about his work and job history while campaigning for the 3rd District seat, after The New York Times first revealed the fabrications on his resume.
A group of House Democrats filed a resolution last month seeking to expel the Republican, while voters across Long Island and Queens are traveling to Washington D.C. and even organizing caravans calling for Santos to step down.
