Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell ripped into Democrats for blocking a narrow coronavirus aid package while at the same time promising to rid the Senate of the filibuster they used to prevent the measure from moving to the floor for debate.

McConnell, a Kentucky Republican, warned Senate Democrats, if they take the majority in the November election, will move to get rid of the 60-vote threshold required to pass legislation and revert to a simple majority.

“This threat to permanently disfigure the Senate has been the latest growing drumbeat in the modern Democratic Party war against our governing institutions,” McConnell said Monday on the Senate floor.

McConnell accused Democrats of “shameless hypocrisy” for using the filibuster to block the GOP coronavirus bill last week.

“Democrats want completely different sets of rules, depending on whether or not they hold power,” McConnell said. “They want to assert minority rights when they have the minority and steamroll them if they get a majority.”

Democrats last week voted to block a coronavirus aid package worth roughly $500 billion, arguing the package was insufficient to help the nation cope with the continued problems associated with the virus outbreak.

Democrats are seeking a package worth at least $2.2 billion after initially proposing a measure worth up to $3.7 trillion.

McConnell read a news story during his Monday afternoon Senate floor speech that outlined plans by Democratic activists, party operatives, and lawmakers to “wage an all-out war on the Senate filibuster,” in order to make it much easier for a new Democratic majority in Congress to pass legislation that Joe Biden could sign into law if he wins the White House. The list includes "Medicare for all," the Green New Deal, and other liberal wish list items.

“This takes measuring the drapes to a new level,” McConnell said. “The Democratic leader and his colleagues aren't just measuring the drapes, they're calculating how much kerosene it would take to burn the drapes down."

The Democratic Left, McConnell said, “Wants to hot-wire democracy itself” by ridding the Senate of the filibuster and changing other institutions, including the Supreme Court, which some Democrats have proposed increasing in size so that they can stack it with party appointees. Democrats want to create a new state out of the District of Columbia, which would guarantee two new Senate Democrats and one new House Democrat.

“Perhaps our colleagues like promising a shameless power grounded, the only way to energize their radical far-left base,” McConnell said, “but the real effect is to make the stakes and these issues completely and totally clear to the American people.”
