Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said Thursday he's not sure if he'll attend the Republican National Convention in Jacksonville – or whether Trump's envisioned convention will happen at all.

"Well, I think the convention is a challenging situation," McConnell, 78, said Thursday morning in Covington, Kentucky. "A number of my colleagues have announced that they are not going to attend, and we'll have to wait and see how things look in late August to determine whether or not you can safely convene that many people."

The RNC backed out of Charlotte, North Carolina, last month and picked Jacksonville as the main site for the convention after North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper and Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles wouldn't commit to allowing a full convention because of health concerns amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Several top Republican lawmakers said they would skip the convention as coronavirus cases climb in Florida.

McConnell spoke to an audience of Northern Kentucky elected officials and business leaders Thursday morning about COVID-19 testing at Gravity Diagnostics in Covington.

The Senate Majority Leader took questions from reporters after Gravity's CEO and a Kroger Co. official talked about increased testing capacity at a new Covington lab.
