Negotiator in chief? Trump offers to spearhead Russia-Ukraine negotiations

Former President Donald Trump mused about spearheading negotiations between Russia and Ukraine Wednesday while reminding his followers that the "Russia/Ukraine catastrophe should NEVER have happened" and would not have under his stewardship.

Responding to speculation that the recent leaks in the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines were the product of Russian sabotage, Trump advised leaders of the United States to "remain 'cool, calm, and dry'" and "get a negotiated deal done NOW" before naming himself as a possible chief negotiator.

"U.S. 'Leadership' should remain 'cool, calm, and dry' on the SABOTAGE of the Nord Stream Pipelines. This is a big event that should not entail a big solution, at least not yet. The Russia/Ukraine catastrophe should NEVER have happened, and would definitely not have happened if I were President," Trump wrote in a post to his Truth Social platform.

Trump mockingly put the word "leadership" in quotation marks to throw shade at President Joe Biden.

On Tuesday, officials announced they detected a leak in the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines, which transport natural gas under the Baltic Sea to Germany from Russia — a critical pathway for Russian gas to reach Western Europe.

Germany suspended the certification of Nord Stream 2 during the early days of Russia's bloody invasion of Ukraine, but the idle line remains capable of exporting gas, Reuters reported. European officials quickly said that the leaks came from sabotage, and the CIA reportedly warned about possible attacks on the pipelines.

Trump stressed that the U.S. should be measured and not overact to the apparent sabotage.

"Do not make matters worse with the pipeline blowup. Be strategic, be smart (brilliant!), get a negotiated deal done NOW. Both sides need and want it. The entire World is at stake. I will head up group???" he wrote.

The former president also flagged remarks Biden made back in February, warning that "if Russia invades ... then there will be no longer a Nord Stream 2. We will bring an end to it."

"Wow, what a statement. World War III anyone," Trump said in another Truth Social post accompanied by a screenshot of an ABC News tweet on Biden's remarks.

Trump has previously argued that the war in Ukraine would not have transpired if he was the president. He also condemned the war during its early days.

Throughout his presidency, he weathered criticism that he was too cozy with Russian President Vladimir Putin. However, his administration did take several hard-line stances against the Kremlin, including shipping lethal military aid to Ukraine.
