Pelosi previews how Democrats will strong-arm House with 'scant' GOP majority
Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) will be laying down the speaker’s gavel with House control going to the Republicans following the 2022 midterm elections.
The California Democrat issued a statement Wednesday night saying House Democrats “defied expectations during the midterm elections” and “will continue to play a leading role in supporting President Biden’s agenda — with strong leverage over a scant Republican majority” in the next Congress.
She also expressed excitement about returning Democratic members of the House, saying they will “reinvigorate our the Caucus with their energy, diversity and patriotism” and thanked those who weren’t returning, noting their “landmark progress on health care, climate action, infrastructure, gun violence, veterans, and more.”
More than a week after Election Day, Republicans officially secured the 218 seats needed to regain control of the House. They could add more seats to that total in the coming days or weeks, as several races are still outstanding.
With the House now in Republican hands, it is unclear whether Pelosi will seek another leadership position with the Democrats.

This evening, the Speaker monitored returns in the three remaining critical states. The Speaker plans to address her future plans tomorrow to her colleagues. Stay tuned.”

Pelosi was first elected speaker of the House in 2007, becoming the first woman to hold the position. From 2011 to 2018, she served as House minority leader before becoming speaker again in 2019, during which time the House impeached President Donald Trump twice.
