Police fire tear gas as thousands protest in Beirut over explosion

Protesters clashed with security forces outside Lebanon’s parliament building as anger over this week’s explosion boiled over in the streets. Thousands of people gathered in Martyr’s Square chanting slogans like “the people want the downfall of the regime”. They believe the blast, caused by thousands of tons of dumped ammonium nitrate, is a consequence of mismanagement and corruption.
