Republican U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson is urging President Donald Trump to nix a possible federal ban on flavored vaping products.

"I am supportive of regulations that ensure the safety of consumer products, and common-sense efforts that prevent youth access to e-cigarettes," Johnson said in a letter sent to the White House this week. "But I am strongly opposed to far-reaching, unchecked government action that stifles innovation and restricts adults’ freedom to choose safer alternatives to smoking. "

In an interview with News/Talk 1130 WISN Radio on Friday, Johnson said he doesn’t oppose proposals that would raise the vaping age to 21.

"My primary concern is on adult health, people who've used vaping products to kick the habit of smoking," he said. "I don't want to encourage anybody to vape."

Johnson’s office said the White House hasn’t responded to his letter, but opponents are critical of the stance, given the number of people who have been sickened by vaping-related illnesses linked to THC and vitamin E acetate.

"I'm just flabbergasted that a United States senator would write a letter to the president encouraging more gummy bear flavors in our vaping packages," Milwaukee Alderman Michael Murphy said.

This week, Trump tweeted he will meet with industry officials, doctors and state representatives to find an "acceptable solution."

Whether that includes a federal ban remains unseen.

"I completely support the regulatory efforts in terms of safety and keeping them out of the hands of kids," Johnson said in the radio interview. "But I'm concerned we're not going through the regular regulatory process here. This is going to have a major economic impact."
