LONG ISLAND, NY — U.S. Rep. Tom Suozzi, a Democrat representing New York's 3rd Congressional District, is projected to maintain his U.S. House of Representatives seat. Republican challenger George A.D. Santos conceded Tuesday.

"Due to the hard work and determination of our grassroots supporters and donors, our campaign defied the odds by coming very close to winning New York’s 3rd Congressional race," Santos said in a statement. "I am proud that we gained the support of every [Police Benevolent Association] and first responder organization that endorsed this cycle. I am personally so grateful for the efforts of our volunteers and those who stood by us from the very beginning. Our volunteers and those who supported our campaign worked hard to help us fight until the very end."

Suozzi said he received a congratulatory call Tuesday morning from Santos. He thanked his opponent for the call.

"It is a great honor to serve as a Member of Congress and I look forward to continuing to work on behalf of the people I represent," Suozzi wrote. "Our nation faces tremendous challenges and the division is distracting us from accomplishing our goals. I will work to try and bridge the divide and address the COVID pandemic, our unstable economy, the climate crisis and the need to rebuild our middle class. I will never stop fighting for Long Island and Queens and the people of our state and country."

Santos said there might be more announcements in the near future regarding his next steps.

"But for right now, I would like to congratulate Congressman Tom Suozzi. We wish him well going forward for the benefit of our district and constituents."

Following Election Day, Santos led Suozzi by more than 4,000 votes. However, as of Monday, Suozzi led Santos by 13,000 after 30,000 absentee ballots — about 30 percent of the total absentees — were counted across Nassau, Suffolk and Queens counties.

Results from the Nassau County Board of Elections show Suozzi leads Santos with 91,287 votes to 76,349 in Nassau. Suffolk and Queens counties have yet to update their numbers.

New York's 3rd Congressional District consists of Port Washington, Great Neck, Manhasset, Roslyn Heights, East Hills, Sea Cliff, Glen Cove, Oyster Bay, Syosset, Jericho, Hicksville, Plainview, Bethpage, Melville, Huntington, Northport, Kings Park, Commack, Little Neck, Glen Oaks and Whitestone.
