Commemorative coins marking President Donald Trump "defeating" COVID-19 have been released for pre-order on an online gift shop as the commander-in-chief continues to be treated for his infection.

The merchandise is up for sale on the website of The White House Gift Shop, which is no longer affiliated with the actual White House, and due to be shipped later in the year.

There is no image of the coin on the website as yet, with a "photo coming soon" message as a placeholder, It is listed for sale at the price of $100.

The coin is part of a series that "chronicles historic moments in the presidency of President Donald J. Trump," designed by Anthony Giannini, who is also board chairman of the White House Gift Shop.

Giannini, writing about the design of the coin, said: "When we heard the sad news of President Trump's positive COVID test, once again we had faith and prayed but we knew our President would find a way to Knockout COVID in early rounds of this battle.

"President Trump, as you know, is a fan of boxing, and the new design includes more than a hint of superhero qualities in history's most fascinating president. President Trump, whether you are in his corner or not, is a sui generis, a one-of-a-kind, bigger than life, singular energetic force."

The White House Gift Shop originally had links to the administration, but has since been transferred to being run by a company owned by Giannini several years ago.

Newsweek has contacted the gift shop and the White House for comment.

Trump tested positive for COVID-19 last week and is being treated at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.

Trump has spoken of "feeling well" while thanking medical staff at the facility.

Taking to Twitter on Saturday, he wrote: "Doctors, Nurses and ALL at the GREAT Walter Reed Medical Center, and others from likewise incredible institutions who have joined them, are AMAZING!!!Tremendous progress has been made over the last 6 months in fighting this PLAGUE. With their help, I am feeling well!"

During his stay, he has thanked supporters who gathered outside the hospital.

On Sunday, he was driven by the crowds and waved to those in attendance.

He has been criticized for doing so, due to concerns over the potential risk to the health of those involved in facilitating the drive-by.
