Trump fading in GOP stronghold, would lose to Cheney
Maybe Rep. Liz Cheney ought to take calls to run for president seriously.
In Utah, won by former President Donald Trump in the last two elections, the Wyoming Republican is leading Trump in early 2024 primary consideration.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is first at 24.2% followed by Cheney at 16.4% and Trump at 14.6%. No other potential candidate is at double digits.

The poll, from the Deseret News/Hinckley Institute of Politics, suggests that some Utah voters are eager to move past Trump, said the newspaper.
“His power, his command over the Republican Party seems to be waning to the point that when you ask Utah Republicans if they would consider a different candidate, they clearly would,” Jason Perry, director of the Hinckley Institute of Politics at the University of Utah, told the paper.
Of course it’s very early in the process, though a time when state polls carry more weight than national polls since its the individual states that control primaries and caucuses.
And it’s not the first to show well for Cheney, who lost her House seat for being critical of Trump and taking a leading role in the House investigation of the Jan. 6 crisis.

A Texas poll, for example, showed that she would edge Sen. Ted Cruz in a primary, though she was well behind Trump and DeSantis, the two top choices of Republicans in the Lone Star State.
The Deseret News poll included several troubling signs for Trump. The most obvious was the willingness of Republicans to consider an alternative. As in most surveys, that alternative is DeSantis.
But he did do a bit better among GOP voters who said that they will participate in the primary, beating Cheney though still behind DeSantis.
