Former White House press secretary Jen Psaki offered a warning to Democrats as they brace for the 2024 presidential election cycle, cautioning that former President Donald Trump’s “evil charisma” could help him or other similarly aligned candidates win the Republican nomination.

Psaki warned Democrats, as well as “sane Republicans” who have come out against Trump’s candidacy, not to underestimate the former president’s influence, especially if he’s not challenged by a “better alternative.” The former White House official’s comments come as the 2024 political playing field begins to take shape, with Trump already launching his presidential bid and a handful of others teasing their announcements are not far off.

“Democrats and sane Republicans underestimate Trump at their own peril because in order for Trump not to win the nomination, there has to be a better alternative,” Psaki said Sunday on NBC’s Meet the Press. “That’s how primaries work.”

Psaki then pointed to possible candidates such as Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) and former Vice President Mike Pence, noting the two are likely seen as the party’s saving grace.

“Ron DeSantis, this man — he’s either the savior or he’s currently at his peak,” Psaki said. “Mike Pence, with all due respect, didn’t exactly light the world on fire politically before he was selected by Donald Trump to be his running mate. So the question is, who’s the alternative?”

Psaki’s comments come as Trump has fallen out of favor with some members of his party, creating a divide among the GOP as some lawmakers seek to sniff out other candidates who could replace Trump as the nominee.

Trump’s favorability has begun to slip with GOP voters, especially after the former president was seen hosting white nationalist Nick Fuentes and rapper Kanye West, who has been under scrutiny for making antisemitic comments, at his Mar-a-Lago home earlier this month.

The former president also came under renewed scrutiny over the weekend after he suggested election fraud should be used to justify terminating the Constitution and throwing out the results of the 2020 election.

Neither DeSantis nor Pence has announced a presidential campaign for 2024, but both have hinted at possible campaigns and are considered to be top contenders for the party nomination.
