This summer, the newsroom welcomed two new Advance Local fellows, Kalyn Dunkins and Cameron Buford. They will work in the newsroom while pursuing an online master’s degree from the Newhouse School of Communications within Syracuse University.

The two positions were developed through a partnership between Advance Local Media, which owns and other newsrooms in the country, and Syracuse. The fellowship is fully funded and specifically aims to help journalists of color establish strong careers in media and communications.

Dunkins currently is working with The Alabama Education Lab team on reporting, social media and developing audience engagement efforts. She has a background in content writing and blogging. She is a 2017 graduate of Denison University and is orginally from Birmingham.

Buford currently works with’s sports team on high school recruiting and sports coverage around the state. He previously worked in sales, but transitioned to journalism and sports coverage in Los Angeles. As a Pro Football Writers Association member, he has covered the NFL, NBA and MLB, along with multiple boxing events in recent years.

They join Alexis Wray, in a previous class of fellows, who works with’s sister publication Reckon News.
