An Air Force member on vacation with his family in Texas died after trying to rescue his young cousins from the surf.

Elijah Posana’s father found his body in the water near Surfside Beach, his family told KHOU Tuesday morning, two days after he went missing.

Posana, 22, was on leave from his Air Force station in Missouri and on vacation when his cousins, both younger than 15, got caught in a riptide around noon on Sunday.

“He wasn’t in no rip current yet,” Posana’s cousin, Ethan, told KHOU. “He came back to help.”

Several branches of the U.S. Coast Guard, the Surfside Police Department and the Brazoria County Sheriff’s Office searched for more than 28 hours before calling off the operation Monday.

“Elijah is the laughter and sunshine of our family, his smile is infectious and he brings laughter everywhere he goes,” the family wrote on GoFundMe.
