After ten years of serving the Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools system, superintendent Ann Levett is ready to retire.

"When I came to the district, I was one year short of retirement," said Levett. "As a member of this community, I thought it was my responsibility to create additional disruptions and leave in the middle of a pandemic."

Levett addressed the school board on Wednesday, and she stated how proud she is of the work done over her time serving SCCPSS.

"We talk about the graduation rates because when I arrived in this space, we were at a 65 percent at graduation rate. We are now at 89 percent, and over the last eight years, we have exceeded the state rate."

Levett also shared her decision to step down is personal and a decision made on her own.

"I want to be available to your family. They have always supported me, but now I need to give them more time to them, and I want everyone to be clear that this is Ann's decision," stated Levett.

Being the 10th largest school district in the state, the board will have to discuss its process for the search for a new superintendent. As of now, no decision has been made as to whether the search will be national or local.
