Annapolis Fire Claims Woman's Life After Crews Rescue Her: Officials
ANNAPOLIS, MD — A woman died days after crews rescued her from a burning Annapolis home, county officials announced Monday. Authorities identified the victim as 63-year-old Danielle Neal.
Investigators said the accidental fire started on the living room couch. They think the fire broke out because somebody was smoking in an area with bottled oxygen.
This was the fourth fire-related death of the year in Anne Arundel County. A press release said Christopher Blaine Isaksen, 62, died after a March 9 blaze in Severn. Darlene Feeheley, 68, was the victim of a March 18 fire in Glen Burnie. Joann Marie Smith, 75, died on April 13 as a result of the injuries she suffered during an April 11 fire in Severn.
There were two fire fatalities from one blaze in 2021. Three separate fires claimed three lives in 2020.
Fatal Annapolis Fire
Neighbors reported the Annapolis blaze last Tuesday around 12:02 p.m. They told a 911 operator that somebody was trapped inside the one-story townhouse in the middle of the row.
First responders arrived to the 2600 block of Compass Drive and saw smoke coming from the front of the home. Crews extinguished a small fire that the residential sprinkler system had contained. Firefighters said they also found and removed the woman.
A Maryland State Police Aviation Command helicopter flew Neal to the burn unit at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center in Baltimore. The victim had critical, life-threatening injuries at the time. She died Saturday, a press release said.
Paramedics drove a second patient with minor injuries to the Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis, the release said.
Back on the scene, a team of 42 controlled the one-alarm fire in 20 minutes.
The Anne Arundel County Fire Department thanked the Annapolis Fire Department for assisting its response.
Officials don't know if the home had functioning smoke detectors. Authorities did not estimate the value of the property lost in the blaze.
