This week marks the 30th anniversary of Apple Patch, a nonprofit that serves adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

"That's why we're here, is to be a pillar of support for individuals with intellectual disabilities and help them achieve their highest level of independence in the community," said Zac Lafollette, director of community programs.

Lafollette said the mission of Apple Patch can be felt throughout the community.

"We work with various employers throughout the community, knocking on doors, trying to find customized employment, not just typical -- we're not trying to get individuals run of the mill employment. We're trying to find meaningful jobs for our individuals," said Lafollette.

Along with the supported employment program, Apple Patch supports more than 300 individuals through residential options, clinical services and day programs. Now, they're building a new state-of-the-art facility that will allow them to serve an additional 40 individuals.

"We are currently constructing a new day program, which is what we refer to as community engagement centers. It will serve approximately 100 individuals throughout the Louisville Metro area and Oldham County," said Lafollette.

This weekend, they will honor the past and future work of the program by hosting a picnic at Fox Hollow Farm in Crestwood.

"We're having a picnic lunch. There's going to be brisket, sweet potato salad, all kinds of good food, and there's going to be games and activities," said Lafollette.
