BEAVERTON, Ore. – As many districts plan to start the 2020-21 school year with distance learning, successful learning could hinge on a student’s access to a reliable internet connection.

Some households struggle with that, but the Beaverton School District is offering a way for some families in their district to get free internet access for six months.

“The ability for students to see their teacher, interact with their teacher, and interact with their students, is all done via a screen of some sort and that requires internet connectivity,” said district spokesperson Shellie Bailey-Shah. “For some of our families that is something they did not have. And so the risk was, they were left out in those interactions between their classmates and the teacher and the content.”

The free internet access is being offered to families who qualify for free or reduced lunch, through a collaboration with Comcast.

The deadline to sign up is Friday, July 31.

You can find out how to apply through the district's website.
