PATERSON — A police chase ended when the suspect turned down the wrong road and nearly collided with a team of firefighters battling a nearby three-alarm fire on Friday night.

Public Safety Director Jerry Speziale would not comment on why the gold sedan was being pursued but confirmed that two suspects were in custody and on their way to police headquarters.

The two were racing from a fleet of Paterson police cruisers on Fair Street, when they took an unfortunate turn onto Rosa Parks Boulevard, nearly careening into a fire command center that had been erected.

"They were coming straight at them," Speziale said.

But the car swerved toward the curb, missing the command center by meters.

Firefighters were on scene to extinguish a massive fire that enveloped the rear of a multi-bay auto body garage on nearby 16th Avenue, but caused no injuries and was contained to the garage alone.

"When we arrived somebody from next door was trying to put it out with a garden hose," Speziale said.

But the garage was fully engulfed when the department arrived after receiving the emergency call around 7:45 p.m.

Crews had the fire under control by 9:35 p.m. shortly after their harrowing near-miss with alleged criminals on the run.

Investigators have not yet determined the fire's cause
