DALLAS (1080 KRLD)- The City of Dallas has partnered with Uber to provide free rides to vaccination sites. The city announced the partnership along with Project Unity, a non-profit founded in 2016 that has since worked to improve access to the COVID-19 vaccine.

Uber will provide 2,000 promo codes to Project Unity, which can then be used for free rides to and from vaccination sites.

Friday, Project Unity will work with Catalyst Health Network to host a vaccination event at St. Luke Community United Methodist Church in East Dallas. Reservations are required and information can be found HERE.

Project Unity will provide a promo code directly to passengers. The City of Dallas says Uber drivers will be able to drop people off and pick them up without waiting in line.

"We are finally nearing the end of the COVID-19 pandemic with the help of these vaccines. But as the supply increases, it is more critical than ever that we work to overcome barriers to vaccination so that we can inoculate as many Dallas residents as possible against this terrible virus. And that effort is made possible by partners such as Uber and Project Unity, which have both stepped up to ensure our communities have equitable access to life-saving vaccines," Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson said in a statement.

Mayor Pro Tem Adam Medrano said in an interview the city has had volunteers going door-to-door in areas where vaccination rates are lower to help them register with Dallas County Health and Human Services and let them know the vaccine is now available to all Texans over the age of 16.

"We'll sign them up right on the spot if they don't have internet," he says. "We're trying to get people to sign up and register. That's my job on the ground is to make sure we have these sign-up hubs throughout the city and throughout my district."

At the vaccination clinic Friday, the first dose of the Pfizer vaccine will be given. People will then be given instructions to receive a second dose April 23.
