Police on Saturday continued to investigate the drowning death of a person who was swimming in Lake Wylie at Mecklenburg County’s McDowell Park and nature preserve.

Three people were at the water’s edge when two of them decided to go swimming Friday afternoon, according to a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department news release.

The pair began struggling to stay afloat, police said.

One of the swimmers was pulled from the water — police didn’t say by whom — and taken by Medic to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries, according to police.

About a half-hour later, Charlotte firefighters found the other person underwater. He was pronounced dead at the scene, according to CMPD. Police have yet to release the person’s name and age.

The swimmer drowned just north of the South Carolina state line near the Buster Boyd Bridge, Observer news partner WBTV reported.

McDowell Nature Preserve is on York Road in southwestern Mecklenburg County. Its 1,132 acres include a nature center, hiking trails, camping and Copperhead Island.
