SANTA ROSA COUNTY, Fla. -- Thursday, hundreds of Santa Rosa County residents are under a boil water advisory.

An error made by a local contractor working on a new home is the reason behind the situation.

Midway Water says the boil water advisory has affected about 300 homes, which has now lasted about a week.

The City of Gulf Breeze says a worker being paid by the Brown Construction Company was doing work on a newly constructed home on Soundside Drive in Midway.

Midway Water says the contractor mistakenly crossed a sewer line with a water line causing feces to be clogged in people’s sinks and shower heads.

Midway Water shut the system down when crews discovered the error and have since flushed the system with more than two million gallons of water.

Channel 3 reached out to the City of Gulf Breeze to see how this could've happened.

The city manager told Channel 3 their inspector was not present when the installation was being done.

"There were utility ticket requests that were reissued a number of times for local utilities to locate their lines during the time that connection was made," the city manager said. "So it's a situation where the contractor made a mistake. Our inspector was not on site when the connection was made and that is certainly a concern."

Residents Channel 3 spoke to say they're using bottled water for their sinks toilets. Some have even considered getting a hotel so they can have a place to shower.

Right now the city is awaiting test results.

So far the city says previous test results have come back negative for any contaminants. They're encouraging any residents if they have any questions or want any updates on the situation to visit midwaywater.com.
