Coronavirus live updates: Texas sees first day with 6,000+ new cases since late September

Total coronavirus cases:

• 872,139 cases in Texas, including 17,578 deaths.

• 215,645 in the Houston region, including 3,664 deaths.

8:58 a.m. One day after closing 16 campuses due to one positive or presumptive positive case, Houston ISD officials announced they will now close if two or more confirmed positive cases are reported on a campus.

The district said students and staff would shift to virtual learning should campuses be closed under the new guidelines, but learning would continue “as normal” if the campus remains open after a single positive case.

8:10 a.m. The total number of cases in Texas stands at 872,139, according to a Houston Chronicle analysis of statewide data. That’s an increase of 6,241 cases from Tuesday.

Texas added 101 newly reported deaths, for a total of 17,578 statewide.

Wednesday was the first day with more than 6,000 newly reported cases since late September. The state's rolling average for new cases is now at 5,263.6.

The Houston region count is 215,645, up 1,183 from yesterday. Harris County added 843 cases, 206 of which are older cases and is at 156,035 cases total. There have been 3,664 deaths in the Houston region, up 19.

The positive test rate is now at 8.81%. The rolling average of viral tests is now at 58,171.

Statewide, there were 4,782 patients hospitalized for lab-confirmed COVID-19. There are 64,884 total staffed hospital beds, 12,019 beds available and 7,593 ICU beds available. There are 4,782 ventilators available.
