Almost 4,800 residents have been infected by coronavirus in new and ongoing school-related outbreaks, according to data released Monday, Oct. 26, by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.

That includes 482 students and staff at outbreaks in 99 schools serving preschoolers through high school. The K-12 clusters include outbreaks involving before- and after-school programs.

The bulk of the cases -- 4,409 -- involve outbreaks on or around 27 college campuses.

Last week, the state reported 5,813 cases at 85 K-12 schools and 30 colleges. The decline in number of cases is a result of the drop in college-related outbreaks; specifically, Grand Valley State University, which reported 922 cases in ongoing outbreaks last week, was not included in this week’s report.

A COVID-19 outbreak is defined as two or more cases with a link by place and time indicating a shared exposure outside of a household.

In the case of K-12 outbreaks, it only reflects people who were infected at school or during a school-related activity, such as sports. College numbers include students infected at parties and other off-campus activities not sponsored by the school.

The state’s report reflects numbers collected on Thursday, Oct. 22.

It identified 29 clusters at K-12 schools and one in college communities newly identified last week. There were also 70 K-12 clusters and 28 college outbreaks identified earlier but that had at least one additional case last week.

“Parents and students should know that if their school is listed, their local health department and school are already investigating. Based on that investigation, people are contacted individually if they were possibly exposed to COVID-19 at school,” said Dr. Joneigh Khaldun, chief medical executive and chief deputy for health. “Michigan schools are working hard to maintain a safe environment while also providing quality education.”

Students or staff exposed to COVID-19 outside the school building and are not thought to have spread the virus in the school due to quarantine or self-isolation are not included in the data.

“Many factors, including the lack of ability to conduct effective contact tracing in certain settings, may result in underreporting of outbreaks,” a state press release said. “This information does not provide a complete picture of school outbreaks in Michigan and the absence of identified outbreaks in a school does not mean it is not experiencing an outbreak.”
