Des Moines veteran receives new roof through national program

Marvin Egbers, a U.S. Navy veteran from Des Moines, received a new roof Friday as part of the Owens Corning Roof Deployment Project.

The project from Love Our Roof, an Xcel Company, is a "nationwide effort to show gratitude and honor the veterans who served our country and the families who support them," according to a news release.

The Owens Corning Foundation donated roofing materials and Love Our Roof donated labor.

Egbers served in the Vietnam War from April 1970 to August 1973. He has lived in Iowa for 36 years and is originally from Quincy, Illinois. He enjoys fishing, shooting and gunsmith work.

Egbers was selected for a roof replacement through a partnership with Rebuilding Together Greater Des Moines.

Rebuilding Together Greater Des Moines has rehabilitated more than 3,750 houses and non-profit facilities over the past 25 years, according to the news release. Its mission is to revitalize houses of low-income homeowners and families, especially of people who are elderly, disabled and military veterans.
