CARLSBAD, CA — The American Red Cross is asking people to donate blood and platelets this summer, especially around the Fourth of July.

The Red Cross sees about a 21 percent decline in donations during holiday weeks, including around the Fourth of July, according to the organization.

"When blood donations drop, so does the blood supply, making it extremely challenging to ensure blood is available when hospitals need it," a Red Cross news release said.

Red Cross blood drives are being held across San Diego County, including near Carlsbad. See a list of upcoming blood drives below. Donors are asked to schedule an appointment prior to arriving at a blood drive.

Anyone who donates blood or platelets through through July 10 will receive an exclusive Red Cross recycled cotton tote bag, while supplies last, according to the organization.
