The following submission comes from Sia Desale:

Girls’ Voices, a signature program of the national nonprofit Greater Good Charities announced the winners of the Girls’ Voices for Change Contest. The global changemaker contest with a theme to help people, pets and the planet asked students to share a video proposal for a change-making idea in their community and/or a photo essay showing positive change taking place in their life.

The 2020 winners were selected from hundreds of entries submitted by young women, ages 13-21, from over 50 countries in three categories: people, pets, and the planet. The grand prize video winners received a $5,000 cash prize and the grand prize photo winners received a $500 cash prize to implement their change-making ideas. All grand prize video winners, including Sia, will receive mentorship from the Girls’ Voices team, to help implement their change-making ideas.

Sia Desale, a Dublin High School student, is the winner of the grand prize award in both the video and photo essay category. Being an avid animal lover, she has been volunteering at the East Bay SPCA since 2018, but the outbreak of Covid-19 made in-person volunteering opportunities scares. Undeterred, she decided to raise funds remotely and launched a nonprofit organization to make and sell handmade, natural bar soaps.

Olivesoap is a nonprofit organization that strives to build stronger communities by donating all business proceeds and donations to humanitarian causes and animal welfare. Sia’s goal is to make the world better by eliminating animal cruelty, neglect, overpopulation, and providing financial support to animal welfare organizations such as the East Bay SPCA.

She plans to donate all her prize money to purchase food and other necessities for shelter animals. Part of the prize money will be invested in her business so that she can continue to support the shelter far into the future.
