An explosion was reported Wednesday at the Lone Star NGL facility in Mont Belvieu, police say.

A natural gas storage facility exploded Wednesday in Mont Belvieu, officials say.

No injuries have been reported. All facility workers are accounted for, said city spokesman Brian Ligon.

The explosion sparked a fire around 4:45 p.m. at the Lone Star NGL facility at 506 W. Winfree St. As of 6 p.m., firefighters were still working to suppress the flames, which so far have been contained to one part of the facility, Ligon said.

He said authorities did not yet know the cause of the explosion. Ligon said a wellhead — a component of an oil or gas well — appeared to be the source of the fire. He added that there is “no public threat” at this time.

State Highway 146 remains closed from FM1942 to FM565.

Lone Star NGL is a subsidiary of Dallas-based Energy Transfer LP, one of the largest natural gas infrastructure companies in the U.S. The company did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the explosion.

The Lone Star facility stores and processes natural gas liquids, which include products like propane, butane and ethane. At the facility, natural gas liquids are separated into individual components through a process called fractionation. Transmission pipelines from the Permian Basin, Barnett Shale and East Texas make up the company’s Lone Star Express network, 535 miles of pipeline that ships natural gas liquids from shale plays to the Mont Belvieu storage and fractionation facility.
