Mars may not be populated by little green aliens, but according to a now-deleted New York Times article, the Red Planet does have large green-rinded fruit.

The piece was titled, “Fields of Watermelons Found on Mars, Police Say.”

Big, if true.

“Authorities say the rise of fruit aliens is to blame for glut of outer space watermelons,” began the bombshell report published on Tuesday. “The FBI declined to comment onreports [sic] of watermelons raining down, but confirmed that kiwis have been intercepted.”

But shortly after it was published, the piece vanished from the internet. “This article was published in error,” now reads the article page.

The gaffe was initially flagged by Futurism, which noted the byline on the article read, “Joe Schmoe.”

It is unclear why the Times would have sought comment from the FBI when the U.S. has a perfectly good Space Force.

UFOs and aliens have been in the news recently, thanks in part to a 60 Minutes segment aired last month that set Twitter ablaze with speculation. Former President Barack Obama later chimed in on The Late Late Show with James Corden.

“What is true,” said Obama, “And I’m actually being serious here, is that there’s footage and records of objects in the skies that we don’t know exactly what they are. We can’t explain how they moved, their trajectory — they did not have an easily explainable pattern.”
