A fiery crash Wednesday night on the Pennsylvania Turnpike Northeast Extension closed the highway near the Lehigh Valley into Thursday morning.

PennDOT reported both the north and southbound lanes were closed at 10:44 p.m. Wednesday, between exit 44 to Route 663, and exit 56 to Route 22 and I-78.

A tractor-trailer crashed into the center barrier and caught fire, according to the Milford Township Volunteer Fire Company No. 1, which posted photos of the charred wreck on the fire company’s Facebook page.

The closure led to traffic delays on Route 22 for the morning commute, state police said.

By 7:40 a.m. Thursday, the turnpike commission reported the southbound lanes were reopened to traffic.

By 9:21 a.m. the northbound lanes were also reopened.
