Firefighters were on the scene of a large commercial fire Saturday night at a feed store in downtown Fayetteville.

The fire at the Family Farm Store, 528 Person St., was reported shortly before 6 p.m. when firefighters at Fayetteville Fire Station 1 across the street saw smoke coming from the building, according to a 7:55 p.m. news release from Battalion Chief Michael Autry.

“Crews initiated a structure fire response and reported heavy smoke coming from the large building. Firefighters found heavy fire inside the structure which had extended into the large attic area,” he said.

Autry said the business sells young livestock, such as chickens, and some of the animals were in the building. The condition of the animals was not immediately known.

An investigation into the origin and cause will be conducted when conditions are safe to do so, Autry said.
