A fire ripped through the building at 2800 S.E. Powell overnight, burning it to the ground.

The boarded-up two-story structure across from Cleveland High School “was a total loss,” Terry Foster of Portland Fire & Rescue said in an email to The Oregonian/OregonLive.

Fire and smoke already had engulfed the building, reportedly built in 1913, when firefighters arrived and began battling the blaze. Eight-four firefighters ultimately arrived at the scene, Foster said.

The blaze also heavily damaged the residence to the building’s east. No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire hasn’t yet been identified; an investigation is ongoing.
