A memorial service for Staff Sgt. Ryan Knauss will be held at 5 p.m. Saturday at the Gibbs High School football stadium, 2628 Tazewell Pike.

The service, which will be held on the 20th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, honors the 23-year-old Corryton soldier who died in an Afghanistan airport bombing last month as Americans evacuated the country.

Community members are welcome to "safely and respectfully" line the route of the procession that will transport Knauss from Mynatt Funeral Home, 4131 E. Emory Road, to Gibbs High School, according to Rep. Tim Burchett's office. The procession itself is only for family members.

The procession will start out east on Emory Road, across Maynardville Pike and continue to Tazewell Pike at Harbison's Crossroads. The procession will turn left onto Tazewell Pike and arrive at the high school at about 4:30 p.m.

After the service, community members can pay their respects in the Gibbs High School gymnasium, where the soldier will be lying in repose. No photos or video recordings are allowed inside the gymnasium.

Those who can't attend the service can sign guest books for the family at the Halls or Fountain City locations of Mynatt Funeral Home. The books will be available starting Thursday afternoon.
