City of Marion Fire Department (MFD) officials say the gas leak in the vicinity of Barbados Avenue and Jamaica Drive has been repaired and residents may now return to their homes.

Earlier today, ten homes in the vicinity of Barbados Avenue and Jamaica Drive in Marion had to be evacuated due to a large gas leak in that area, according to the Marion Fire Department.

Crews from MFD and Columbia Gas spent about five hours at the scene to repair the leak and are still working to restore gas service to any residents that were affected by a loss of service. MFD officials said the evacuations were "a cautionary measure."

The area remains closed to traffic, according to a fire department spokesman.

MFD officials said Taft Elementary School was not affected by the gas leak.
