GEICO closes all of its offices in California

GEICO is closing all of its offices in California.
Californians hoping to walk into a GEICO insurance office for their needs are out of luck: The company has shuttered all of its 38 offices in the state.
Their website currently only lists a few agents in San Diego as open for business in California. Until recently it listed the offices of Bay Area agents in Pleasanton, Pleasant Hill, Morgan Hill, Fremont, Mountain View, Emeryville, San Leandro and San Jose. The Sacramento Bee reports 38 offices are closing and hundreds of GEICO workers are being laid off across the state as a result.
People looking to sign up for a GEICO policy will need to access their offerings online. California customers cannot purchase policies via phone.
“We continue to write policies in California, and we remain available through our direct channels for the more than 2.18 million California customers presently insured with us,” GEICO told the Bee in a statement.
Because the move may affect customers who do not have access to the internet, the California Department of Insurance is keeping an eye on the closures to ensure Californians can still have equitable access to GEICO’s services.
GEICO, which is headquartered in Chevy Chase, Maryland, is one of the largest auto insurance companies in the nation. The private company is a subsidiary of business giant Berkshire Hathaway.
