KETTERING, Ohio (WDTN) – Police were called to an elementary school in Kettering after a student allegedly brought a gun on Tuesday, Feb. 22.

According to a Kettering City Schools spokesperson, the incident started when John F. Kennedy Elementary School Principal Laura Meek was contacted by a parent after the school day. A student told the parent that they saw a gun in another student's locker.

Police reported that when a staff member of the school asked the student why they did not tell the teacher they had seen a gun, the child said they were afraid the student who had brought the gun would hurt them.

A staff member at the school had initially thought the gun was not real due to its appearance so she picked it up and then real noticed its weight and saw rounds in the chamber. She then immediately put it down, said police.

Kettering Police identified the gun as a pink camo Sig Sauer P365 9mm and said it was in working condition. Dispatch ran the serial number of the gun and confirmed it had not been stolen.

Police were unable to trace any fingerprints on the gun since other people had touched it and they are still working on tracking down the actual owner.

It’s not known why the gun was brought to the school.

Police said this case is being presented to the Juvenile Prosector’s Office for review and possible charge consideration.
