Authorities say the initial shooting happened at Bay View Cemetery, with the officer wounded in the shoulder.

At least one suspect then fled to the bodega on Martin Luther King Drive, where that person was firing at responding officers.

Police retreated and took up defensive positions, and hundreds of officers, SWAT units, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives descended on the scene.

The wounded officer was taken to Jersey City Medical Center.

Heavy gunfire could be heard around 2 p.m. in what appeared to be an intense gun battle with the suspect or suspects.

The situation is active and ongoing, and Martin Luther King Drive is closed in both directions. There were unconfirmed reports of a possible second gunman jumping from roof to roof.

Police were searching the cemetery for evidence and have recovered the officer's vehicle and radio there.

They have also reviewed surveillance that shows at least one suspect exiting a van, and that person is believed to have gone into the bodega.

Several schools in the area were placed on lockdown, including Lincoln and Snyder high schools, Schools 12, 14, 29 and 41, and Sacred Heart.

All Bayonne schools are under a shelter in place as a precaution.

New Jersey Transit has suspended rail and bus service on the west side of Jersey City, including Hudson-Bergen Light Rail service and all bus service on the West Side branch.
