Hallsville School District "rang in" their first day of school on Tuesday with the ringing of the Hallsville Grade School bell.

This is the first time in almost 70 years the bell has been rung.

The Hallsville Grade School bell was installed when the first public school in Hallsville was built in 1888.

Teachers use to ring this bell to call the students for the start of another day of school.

The bell resided in the Hallsville Public School until 1964, when the building was demolished.

It's now maintained and overseen by the Hallsville Historical Society.

President of the historical society, Dorothy McKenzie was one of the members to ring the bell on Tuesday. McKenzie first heard the bell ring in 1943 when she attended first grade at Hallsville Grade School.
