Rental scams have been around for decades and now they’re trending again as scammers take advantage of the vulnerable during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Several homes in St. Cloud have been listed as “for rent” on Facebook, but they aren’t for rent. They’re actually for sale, making it easy for scammers to get ahold of photos and information on the home, then creating their own fake listings.

Diane Catte says she looked into two listings but decided to take a step back when the lister asked her for money before even seeing the homes.

“He tried to get me to send money to him by Zelle or PayPal... I looked on Google and the house was for sale, not for rent. So I knew right then and there it was a scam,” Catte said.

The St. Cloud Police Department says scams are common and to do your research before writing a check.
