The secret to success for much of this operation is in the hands of thousands of volunteers.

Sharon Leslie, a Massachusetts native, decided to try and help mobilize volunteers across the country by creating VaxVolunteers.org, a website and resource hub that creates a one-stop-shop for people looking to volunteer at COVID-19 vaccination sites.

"The medical community itself can't handle everything that's out there, so we need traffic controllers, greeters, data entry, vaccinators themselves," Leslie said.

Joelle Galatan, a public health student in Massachusetts, says the opportunity to volunteer for Leslie's website seemed like the perfect fit for her.

"I sort of Google volunteer opportunities in various states and whenever I find a site that has not yet been listed on the website, I enter it into the database," Galatan said.

Leslie, who now resides in California, says creating the website gave her the chance to open up opportunities to others and that the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.

"What I've found is that volunteering at vaccine clinics really has struck a chord with people," Leslie said. "It's something they can do that is concrete and safe, and it really moves the needle forward."

Anyone age 18 or older is eligible to volunteer through VaxVolunteers. To sign up, click this link and search your location.
