Update: The commission started its meeting at 3:17 p.m. Wednesday.

A scheduled Michigan redistricting commission meeting has been indefinitely delayed due to a reported emailed death threat, the commission’s spokesperson said Wednesday.

The commission’s Wednesday meeting was scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. in the Michigan State University Union and would have been the first deliberation meeting on political legislative and congressional maps since it completed its second round of public hearings in Flint Tuesday.

“At 1:06 p.m. today, the Michigan Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission received notification of a death threat received through email,” commission spokesperson Edward Woods said. “We alerted law enforcement and they opened an investigation.”

“As of now, the commission meeting is suspended until further notice,” he continued.

Michigan State University Police Inspector Chris Rozman said police responded to the scene shortly after 1 p.m. and said detectives are conducting a follow-up investigation.

The email with a threatening message was sent Tuesday and was opened and read by the recipient Wednesday, he said.

“We do not believe there is any safety concern for the community and we have not determined the threat to be credible at this time,” he said.
