A Mississippi man was busted on a felony charge Tuesday after police said he threw a helpless dog off an overpass and onto a busy road.

Multiple witnesses reported seeing the suspect, 20-year-old Merterrious Johnson, holding the animal before throwing it on Interstate 55 in Southaven around 11 a.m., according to police.

The dog, who appeared to be a pit bull mix, survived the fall without major injuries and was taken to the Southaven Animal Shelter, local news station WREG reported.

Officers found the suspect moments later and charged him with one count of animal cruelty. He was still being held Wednesday on $1,000 bond, jail records show.

His motive was not known.
