A mail carrier in Newmarket is being credited with saving the life of a woman in the small town.

Kayla Berridge said she was walking her normal 9-mile route when she noticed that one of her customers hadn't picked up her mail for a few days. The customer is a woman in her 80s, so the postmaster notified police and requested a welfare check.

"I just had a gut feeling and wanted to make sure," Berridge said. "Most people put a hold in if they're not there, so when people pick up their mail every day, you start to notice their habits."

When officers entered the home, they found the woman on the floor under some items that had fallen on her. Police said the woman had been there for at least three days.

"We just think it's indicative of a small town and the mail carriers and the residents knowing each other and realizing something might not be right and reaching out to the proper authorities," said Newmarket police Lt. Wayne Stevens.

Police said the woman is being treated at Exeter Hospital for dehydration and hypothermia but should be fine.
