The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management said a home's failed oil tank filter is to blame for 250 gallons of oil leaking into a well near Spring Lake in Burrillville Saturday afternoon.

DEM spokesman Mike Healey said the 911 call came in at 3:10p.m. Two hazmat crews responded shortly after.

Healey said that DEM also had a vacuum truck at Spring Lake to pump out the oil.

The Burrillville Fire Department sent a boat out into the lake but did not see oil on the shoreline or in the water, but a sheen is "definitely visible", according to Healey.

Photographs shared with NBC10 showed that booms had been placed in the water early Saturday evening.

Crews will return on Sunday morning to reinspect.
