Oklahoma City area is in “Tier 2” of the state’s new COVID-19 hospital surge plan as of Thursday, Oct. 22, according to officials with the Oklahoma State Department of Health.

According to Matt Stacy, the health department’s surge plan advisor, Oklahoma City is the only region in the state in Tier 2, meaning 15%-19% of all hospitalizations in a region are COVID-19. What that means is some of the following actions will take place at the hospitals according to their internal surge plans, Stacy said:

  • They will have to transfer lower acuity patients to rehab and special focus facilities to create more bed capacity in the higher acuity hospital setting.
  • Additional staffing can be brought in to bring more rooms online.
  • They may choose to selectively decrease some elective procedures.

Stacy said the hospitals do have additional bed space and the tiers create an agreed-upon response amongst them to help evenly distribute patients across the various hospital systems.

As of Thursday evening, Oklahoma’s COVID-19 hospitalizations reached another record-high of 956.

KOCO 5’s Dillon Richards was last told that the new surge plan isn’t implemented yet. State health department officials said they are putting the finishing touches on a dashboard that will provide daily information about where each region is within the state’s updated hospital surge capacity plan. The first full report will be available in the coming days, officials said.
