A wildfire that sparked Tuesday in northwest Nevada County has prompted mandatory evacuations of homes and warnings to residents in neighboring Yuba County.

The Rices Fire, which started about 2 p.m. Tuesday, had grown to roughly 520 acres by 6:30 p.m., said Mary Eldrige, a spokeswoman for the Cal Fire Nevada-Yuba Placer Unit. She said firefighters had 0% of the fire contained.

The fire originated in the area of Rices Crossing and Cranston roads near Bridgeport, according to Cal Fire. Firefighters initially reported a “fully involved structure” at the scene, flames had spread into the vegetation with a moderate rate of spread.

Nevada County officials issued mandatory evacuations for Zones NCO-E029, CSP-E028, NCO-E329 and NCO-E383. “Generally, this is the area north of Pleasant Valley Rd from Bridgeport. East to Birchville Rd up to the Yuba County line,” the Sheriff’s Office said in a social media post. Zones NCO-E327, NCO-E389, NCO-E331, NCO-N330, and CSP-E390 were under evacuation warnings.
