Pittsburgh Wrestling Classic and NHSCA Nationals headline busy weekend of high school wrestling
MCMURRY, PENNSYLVANIA – The 59th Annual Pittsburgh Wrestling Classic, which used to be called the Dapper Dan Classic, was held on Saturday night at the AHN Arena at Peters Township High School in McMurray. Over the years, PA has won some of these showdowns, but more times than not the USA All-Star team has carried too much horsepower to fail. Such was the case with this edition as the national squad captured a 33-9 victory.
Abbie Mills (No. 22 in FloWrestling girl’s rankings, Laurel HS) kicked things off at 164lbs vs No. 1 Destiny Rodriguez from West Linn, Oregon. Mills jumped out to an early lead, but Rodriguez turned the tide and with the score knotted at seven, she picked up the fall at the 3:16 mark of the second period.
Instead of starting with the first lower weight, the boys began at 189, so the final match could be a third meeting of local hero No. 1 Rocco Welsh (Waynesburg Central) and No. 2 Josh Barr (Davison, MI).
Brayden Thompson was No. 1 in the rankings when he transferred from Illinois to Oklahoma mid-season. Thompson did not wrestle in the Oklahoma state series, so we removed him from our rankings. The Stillwater grappler dominated Jacob Jones (Saucon Valley) before planting him with two seconds left in the second frame, 3:58.
No. 3 Gavin Nelson (Simley, MN) needed a third period takedown to grab the lead and end with a 3-2 decision of No. 9 Sonny Sasso (Nazareth) at 215lbs. At heavyweight, No. 8 Matthew Moore (Mesa Ridge, CO) had his hands full with Carlisle’s Layton Schmick despite being visibly larger than his foe. In the end, Moore edged the surprising Schmick, 4-3.
U17 World Gold Medalist, No. 2 Marc-Anthony McGowan (Blair Academy, NJ) was up next. McGowan was precise and controlling in his 3-0 win over Cael Nasdeo (Williamsport, HM), using a first period takedown and an escape in the second for his scoring at 121.
The 127lb bout was a rematch from the 2020 Super 32 Finals won by No. 9 Vinny Kilkeary (Greater Latrobe) over Braeden Davis (Dundee, MI, No. 9 at 132). A scoreless first was followed by an explosive start to the second period that included a Peterson, a throw, and a scramble that resulted in an escape for Davis.
Kilkeary got an escape of his own at the start of the final frame. As time ticked down it looked like Davis was about to secure a takedown when Kilkeary electrified the crowd with a counter out of nowhere that ended with him in a Merkle-like, seatbelt position collecting back points. Davis would escape, but the damage was done as Kilkeary posted PA’s first win, 5-2.
No. 1 Cael Hughes (Stillwater, OK, 133) pinned No. 10 Jaden Pepe (Wyoming Area) when they last met in the 2019 Fargo semis. While there would be no fall this time, the result was still the same, a victory for Hughes. This time of the 6-0 variety.
Tyler Kasak could have wrestled his senior season at Bethlehem Catholic but felt he had little left to prove in high school, so he bypassed the season to work out at the Nittany Lion Wrestling Club. He would be a top ranked grappler if he participated this year.
Kasak (139) faced off with a familiar foe, No. 2 Ryder Block (Waverly-Shell Rock, IA). Kasak won a 2018 meeting and Block won their more recent encounter. This one would go in Kasak’s favor as his first period takedown laid the foundation for a 3-2 decision.
Rematches were a recurring theme on Saturday and 145 gave us another with No. 1 Koy Buesgens (New Prague, MN) squaring off with No. 4 Mac Church (Waynesburg Central). Church won their first matchup in 2019. Buesgens has won the last two meetings, both at Super 32 in 2021 and 2022. No one put points up to open the match. Buesgens put one on the board with a second period escape. Church chose neutral for the third but could not parlay that into the winning takedown, falling 1-0.
At 152, No. 2 Ty Watters (West Allegheny) used a quick takedown to go up on No. 3 Dylan Gilcher (Detroit Central Catholic, MI), 2-0. Gilcher escaped, then Watters put an escape in the book in the next period, only to see Gilcher execute a flawless takedown to tie it at three.
Watters escaped but tweaked his ankle doing so, but ending the middle frame with the lead, 4-3. The third began with Watters choosing to let Gilcher up. A takedown with a minute left would be the winning score for Gilcher as he allowed a late escape to Watters but won the bout, 6-5.
No. 4 Ethan Stiles (Conant, IL) faced No. 9 Dylan Evans (Chartiers Valley) in the consolation rounds at Fargo last summer and decked the PA grappler. Stiles would have to work much harder for the win this time, walking away with a 5-3 tally.
The hyped headliner with Welsh and Barr closed the night. Barr won their 2022 Fargo Final. Welsh won their Who’s No. 1 rematch. The rubber match would need overtime to be decided, as the two traded escapes in regulation. 38 seconds into OT, Welsh exploded for the winning takedown, 3-1, and with it Outstanding Wrestler honors.
The opening act for the action was Ohio’s All-Stars versus the WPIAL All-Stars. Ohio won the match 23-18 with Cali Leng (Marysville, 124), Max Hermes (Milan Edison, 121), Austin McBurney (Massillon Perry, 127), Dy’Vaire VanDyke (Walsh Jesuit, 139), Wynton Denkins (Perrysburg, 152, honorable mention), No. 6 Myles Takats (Perrysburg, 172) and No. 13 Dylan Russo (Olentangy Liberty, 215) picking up wins.
Denkins needed overtime to squeak by Lucas Kapusta (Hempfield Area), 3-1. Takats also needed extra time to down Matthew Furman (Canon-McMillan, HM), 3-1. Russo won a tight one with Waynesburg Central’s Eli Makel (HM), 4-2.
Putting wins on the paper for PA were Anthony Ferraro (Pine Richland, 133), Nico Taddy (West Allegheny, 145), No. 11 Grant MacKay (Laurel, 160), Brody Evans (Waynesburg Central, 189) and Ty Banco (Trinity, 285). MacKay defeated Wadsworth’s Christopher Earnest (HM), 7-4.

NHSCA Nationals
VIRGINIA BEACH, VIRGINIA – The NHSCA Nationals in Virginia Beach ran from Friday morning to Sunday afternoon. The event originated as the Senior Nationals and in the early days, it was just that division. In recent years, it has been expanded to include a freshman, sophomore, and junior division. More recently a girls and middle school division were added.
We’ll start where they originally did, the seniors. We will only highlight significant results starting with 132 lbs., where No. 7 Tyler Knox (MA) gathered a second NHSCA championship by pitching an 11-0 shutout over Maryland’s Jacob Brenneman (No. 20 at 138). At 138, unranked Isaiah Powe from Alabama got by Ohio’s David McClelland (HM) 6-4 for that crown.
Two unranked wrestlers met in the 145lb final, which was won by Pennsylvania’s Cade Wirnsberger, 3-1, in overtime in his dance with North Carolina’s Tyler Tracy. Tracy kicked No. 24 Patrick Jordon (VA) out of the championship bracket with a 15-2 dismantling in the quarters. Jordon tumbled down to the seventh position.
The 152 class repeated the unranked wrestler theme with Delaware’s Luke Bender authoring a 6-1 win over North Carolina’s Drew Pepin. Pepin upset No. 24 Keagan Judd (VA), 6-5, in the semis. Judd would take fourth.
No. 9 Rafael Hipolito (Ashburn, Va.) won the toughest bracket with a 4-3 win over Florida’s Christopher Minto (HM) in the 160lb finals. Hipolito’s semifinal win came against No. 14 Boeden Greenley (North Dakota), 11-4. Greenley downed No. 18 Erik McCown (CA) in the championship bracket but was pinned by McCown in the third-place match, 1:14.
At 195, Toby Schoffstall (VA) beat No. 25 Tomas Brooker (NC) to reach the finals where he dominated the match with Eric Carlson (NY), 11-0. Brooker placed fifth. The heavyweight final was a rematch of the Division II New York State final won by Trent Sibble over Tristen Hitchcock, Sibble won this meeting too, but needed overtime in this one. Both are in the HM section of our rankings.
The Junior Division played mostly to script, but of course, there were upsets. At 113, Jermaine Peace (SC, HM at 120) wrestled an excellent match versus No. 15 Colyn Limbert (OH) picking up a 6-4 victory. But the huge bomb was dropped on this field by New Jersey’s Kurt Wehner when he shocked No. 5 Louie Gill (PA), 10-7, in the quarter finals.
Limbert vanquished Wehner to the consolation bracket with a 2-0 semi final win. Gill throttled Wehner, 10-0, in their bronze medal rematch.
No. 10 Isaiah Quintero (CA) won the 120lb title with an ultimate tiebreaker win over Florida’s Ethan Rivera (No. 7 at 113). No. 10 Nikolaus O’Neill won a Pennsylvania showdown at 126 over Mason Ziegler (HM), 5-0.
Tyson Sherlock relegated Kade Brown (OH, HM) to consolation status on the basis of a 3-0 blanking during the semis. Sherlock was crowned 132lb champ by forfeit when his proposed opponent, Mason Kernan (PA) suffered food poisoning.
At 145, Logan Fowler (TN) won a round of 32 match with No. 15 Andrew Barbosa (CA), 8-1. In the quarters, Fowler beat third place finisher August Hibler (NJ), 3-0. Hibler eliminated Barbosa in the wrestle backs with a :33 pin. Fowler executed a perfect 8-0 major decision of Jonathan Fuller (NJ) in his finals match.
No. 7 Conner Harer (PA) won a closer than expected encounter with North Dakota’s LJ Araujo, 4-3, at 152.
No. 9 Latrell Schafer (No. 9 at 175) dropped down to 160lbs and claimed the championship with a 5-2 win over Kendrick Hodge (FL). Hodge beat Ryan Garvick (PA, HM), 5-2, in the semis. Garvick bounced back for third, and along that journey he handed a 5-2 loss to No. 24 Xavier Giles (NY). Giles lost to Schafer, 5-4, in the quarters and also dropped his fifth-place match to New York’s Gage LaPlante, 7-3.
The 170lb champ, Nate Blanchette (MA), had an unexpectedly easy time in the latter stages of the tournament, rolling to a 14-6 major-decision of Omer Barak (FL) in the finals. To reach the gold medal bout, Blanchette decked No. 13 Gage Wright (WV) in the second period, 2:33.
Barak was winning 7-4 in the third period when he flattened No. 23 Tyler Secoy (GA) in the quarters. Wright rallied back to take third and one of his wins was a consolation semi pin of Secoy, 2:08. Secoy landed in the fifth spot.
No. 25 Cy Kruse (MN) handled Brenan Morgan (PA) with relative ease, 8-2, at 220lbs.
The Sophomore Division was more in line with expectations in regard to the highly ranked competitors, although there was one huge exception at 120lbs. No. 9 Gauge Botero (PA) lost in the ultimate tiebreaker to Texas’ Caio Aron, 3-2, during the semis. Aron could not complete the Cinderella run, falling to No. 7 Sebastian Degennaro (FL), 3-1, in the title bout.
No. 2 Aaron Seidel (PA) planted Ohio’s Adam Mattin with 29 seconds left, 5:31, to win the 106lb crown. Fellow Pennsylvanian, Anthony Evanitsky (No. 18 at 138) won the 145lb bracket with a 4-1 decision of Leo Contino (CA).
For Florida’s Claudio Torres his title run here adds to the strong finish to the season that saw him win a National Prep crown, including a win over Blair’s No. 6 William Henckel, who was No. 2 when Torres beat him. Torres, who is ranked No. 5 at 150, won the 152lb gold on the strength of his wrestling in the neutral position, 7-5, over Georgia’s Dom Bambinelli, who came down a bit from 165 where he is ranked No. 10.
The 182lb throwdown was one of two wrestlers ranked in the top 15 at 175, No. 7 Jarrel Miller (OH) and No. 14 Harvey Ludington (NJ). Ludington overwhelmed Miller from the get-go, ending his title hopes 1:29 into the match.
Lastly, we have the Freshman Division.
At 106, No. 7 JoJo Uhorchuk (TN) pinned Nicolas Enzminger (ND) with 13 seconds on the clock of the opener, 1:47. Enzminger made it to the final bout after pinning Indiana’s Nathan Rioux (HM) in the first period of their semifinal, 1:03. Rioux came back to claim a bronze.
No. 20 Antonio Mills had a harder time winning his 113lb gold over Mason Jakob (TN), edging his rival, 6-5. Mills had his way with Utah’s Mason Carlson, 15-6, to earn his trip to the finals. A round earlier, Carlson upset No. 16 Karson Brown (OH), 6-4. The two would meet again, in the bronze bout, with Brown turning up the intensity for an 11-2 victory.
Cael Weidemoyer (PA, HM) won the 152lb match in quick fashion, putting Virginia’s Billy Tyler to sleep in just over a minute, 1:01. Another highly regarded Pennsylvania rep beat Weidemoyer’s fall time, as No. 17 Adam Waters dropped Aiden Peterson (OH) 54 seconds into their meeting at 170.
