A Placer County resident is being tested for coronavirus, health officials said Tuesday evening. In response, the county has declared a local health emergency.

The resident is an older adult whose exposure likely came while traveling on a Princess cruise ship going from San Francisco to Mexico, Placer County Public Health said in a news release. This is linked to a Feb. 11 to Feb. 21 cruise where a previous case was confirmed.

Placer County Public Health said this resident would not have gotten the viral infection from community transmission because travel is a factor. The resident is critically ill and is isolated in a local hospital.

“We expect to see additional cases in coming days, including cases of community spread, not linked to travel,” Health Officer Dr. Aimee Sisson said in a news release. “We are declaring these emergencies today so we will be able to activate and deploy resources to adequately respond to an increase in cases.”

A confirmation is expected from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Placer County Public Health said.
