Prince William coming to Boston in December for Earthshot Prize event 9/22/2022 Will Katcher,

The newly-named Prince and Princess of Wales will journey across the pond this winter to Boston, they confirmed Wednesday.

William, Prince of Wales, will visit Boston on Dec. 2 alongside his wife, Catherine, Princess of Wales, for the 2022 Earthshot Prize awards ceremony at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum in Dorchester.

The award ceremony, which began last year, honors a group of innovators, “each representing a groundbreaking solution to repair our planet.” William confirmed the visit, which was first revealed in July, in a video message to attendees of the Earthshot Prize Innovation Summit being held this week in New York City.

“Both Catherine and I are so excited to be coming to Boston in December,” William said. “We look forward to seeing you all very soon.”

It will mark the first visit by a Prince or Princess of Wales to Massachusetts since William’s father King Charles III — then Prince Charles — spoke at Harvard University’s 350th anniversary celebration in 1986, according to the Boston Globe. It is William and Catherine’s first visit to Boston.

The Earthshot Prize draws its name from Kennedy’s 1962 “moonshot” speech, in which he laid out a commitment to put man on the moon within the decade.

“I can think of no better home for the Earthshot Prize in its second year than the birthplace of President John F. Kennedy, from whom we have taken so much inspiration,” William said in his video message.

From a group of finalists selected for the prize, five winners will receive 1 million British pounds, or about $1.1 million, to continue their work combatting the effects of climate change. The finalists will be announced in the coming weeks, William said.
