PROVIDENCE — State Education Commissioner Angélica Infante-Green has issued proposed order detailing how the Department of Education will assume control over the city's schools.

The order was delivered to Mayor Jorge Elorza, interim Supt. Frances Gallo, and members of the City Council and the School Board this morning.

"The commissioner shall exercise all the powers and authorities over the budget, program and personnel of PPSD and over the school governance," the letter said.

It also says that she assumes all powers and authorities currently exercised by the mayor and the City Council as it pertains to the schools.

On Sept. 13, the commissioner will hold a hearing to review any evidence submitted by the major parties. Once the decision becomes final, the commissioner will appoint a state turnaround superintendent who will work with the community to develop a turnaround plan.
