St. Paul voters will have six candidates to choose from in November to fill an open seat on the school board.

The special election winner will serve out the final year of Marny Xiong’s term following her death in June from COVID-19.

The candidates who filed by Tuesday’s deadline are:

  • Jim Vue, a cultural educator at the arts nonprofit In Progress. The school board appointed him to take Xiong’s place until the election.
  • Keith Hardy, a former board member who lost in 2015 after failing to secure the DFL endorsement.
  • Charlotte “Charlie” Castro, an adjunct professor who took fifth in the nine-way race for four board seats last fall.
  • Omar Syed, a coffee shop owner and pharmacy technician who took seventh in last year’s election.
  • James Farnsworth, a 2016 Highland Park graduate who until recently administered a popular Facebook group on St. Paul district issues.
  • Jamila Mame, an organizer with the nonprofit TakeAction Minnesota.
